It’s official, I’m a nerd…

It’s official, I am a nerd. My wife said it!

Ok, so now that I think about it, it is probably true. You see, I fixate on random facts and ideas, that to me are interesting, but to everyone else…well, you can see it in the way they roll their eyes. Alright, take novels, how many times do you find yourself finding inconsistencies with the magic system in a fantasy, or remember a tidbit of information that was never used properly, or realize that the science in the sci-fi novel was way too un-believable? This is me, this is my life. I am not a critic, yet I seem to criticize novels, movies, games, etc… I still love them!

Next, we get to my topics of interest. I want to try everything. I love music, books, electronics, computers – i.e. the net, video games, paper and dice games (hush to all you haters), high adventure activities, fishing, swimming, climbing, boating, traveling (well the visit to other places actually, not so much the travel itself) and so on… I like just about anything to do with the sciences. I am frugal by nature and would rather try to build something than buy it (doesn’t always work out). I come up with business ideas on a weekly or monthly basis, and then I do some research and find the cost of operation (permits, licenses etc.) typically outweigh the profits; that or the cost of start-up is more than I have made my entire life times ten.

I haven’t even touched on my bucket list, I don’t think I can write it without spending two months in the process. Suffice it to say, publishing a fictional series is near the top of my list, followed closely by composing a symphony, starting a successful company in manufacturing, and building a space craft. I just scream nerd, eh?

So there you have it, a brief look into me, a nerd. 😉

Current Progress

I have made lot’s of progress, and my plot line is slowly coming together. With all the twists and turns I intent to take readers through, I am trying to make reading and understanding the events as simple as possible. Like I have stated, my goal is to target both adult and young adults, but to hold the interest of each group requires a delicate balancing act.

I am still in the plotting and outline phase, but I’ve written a number of scenes already. If I can figure out a few area’s that I am struggling with, I will probably write like mad. Good old writer’s block is the thing slowing me down, but in spite of those sections of the story, other parts are taking shape. My characters are filling out and becoming who they need to be. It’s fun…really! 🙂

Hope

Isn’t life crazy arround the holidays? Think about all that Christmas shopping, all the sales gimmicks, the political maneuvers, the work we get stuck with ’cause ‘Joe” left on vacation… It’s enough to make one crazy, stressed or even depressed!

I admit, I had my moment a few days ago when everything, including the car breaking down, happened at once. I thought I was going to lose it; the stress was beyond my ability to cope.  Here is how I handled it:

First of all, I have to tell you that I have over an hour commute to and from work. On my way home instead of my normal radio stations, I tuned into something with Christmas music. I tried to forget everything bugging me and just listened for a while. I pondered what Christmas was like as a kid; waking up very early, looking through the stocking, going to see the tree, etc… I remembered caroling at people’s homes. I thought of the meaning behind the season. I thought of what we should learn and remember from that birth.  Continue reading

Update

As I am in the early stages of the story, big changes are sometimes necessary. The old outline I had been working with did not do justice to the overall story, and being a bit of a perfectionist, I decided to rewrite the outline. The result has been a boost in my ability to picture scenes and story progression. The downside is that major parts have changed and I had to rewrite the first chapter and other chapters.

Overall, even with the rewrites, this process has gotten me back on track and may set the finish date for part one a bit sooner. As it stands, I have a goal to finish the first full draft of part one – Rise of Dissidence – by no later than Thanksgiving, November 2011. If this goal is to be accomplished, I need to write an average of 7,700 words a month. We will see if I can keep the pace up.
