Finals are Over…

…well, till the next school year…

Anyway, I have been asked a few time if finals are finished and since the question keeps coming up I am writing this entry. THEY ARE OVER! I would be enjoying my free time, but work has picked up and deadlines are keeping my pockets lined with overtime pay. I am trying to juggle life and writing together; it’s hard, but once I get into the rhythm of things I should post more updates.

I’ll leave this image with you to remind us all what life can be like, enjoy:

From Star Trek to Reality

Star Trek

When did you first see a Star Trek episode or movie? For me it was the second movie I ever saw in a theater, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I was about seven years old and the only other movie I had seen in a theater was, An American Tail. As soon as I saw it,  I was hooked, and a new Trekkie was born. The idea of a starship, engines pushed to the max, flinging itself in a tight orbit around the sun to exceed the speed of light and thereby travel back in time, made sense to me, even though the plot rode on a crazy idea that whales would determine the survival of earth. I loved the movie, and from that time hence, I have seen almost every episode, in almost every series of Star Trek. What amazes me is the attention to detail and the science behind the fiction. I crave the thoughts and ideas of traveling the stars and “…explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” That phrase has been a part, a piece of my life since the first time I heard it. Who do you write like?

This is a great question. I happened on a website that analyzes your writing style based on what you paste or type in the box.  I was interested to find out that my style changed from post to post or piece to piece. I have a funny feeling that the way I write is heavily influenced by things I have read recently. It may not mean much but I find this fascinating and worth investigating. My own style and voice is still being, and will continue to develop for the foreseeable future.

Based on the results of the tool, my writing seems to be similar to the following:

I write like
Neil Gaiman

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
Dan Brown

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
H. P. Lovecraft

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
Edgar Allan Poe

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

I guess, Neil Gaiman, Dan Brown, H.P. Lovecraft, and Edgar Allan Poe are some of the authors I have taken notes from. I checked many pieces of my writing and these seemed to repeat, so at least it seems consistent.

The voice I use in my book was most like Neil Gaiman, whereas my posts varied between Lovecraft and Dan Brown. Every now and then the analyzer would come up with Edgar Allan Poe, so I must have some small bit of poetic flow during those pieces.

Overall I think it is a good tool to see how your own voice changes. It could be useful for those seeking symmetry throughout a single work, so I recommend trying it out yourself: http://iwl.me/

Let me know who you write like.

Classifying the Art of Dance

The following is a paper written for a dance appreciation class.  The requirements for the paper included responding to the question, “What is Dance?” while including various points from specific lectures (I.E. the propaganda section).  It’s not my best work, but due to a request, I am posting it anyway. Enjoy!

What is dance? That question has a myriad of answers stemming from all aspects of the art. When I was first approached with this question, at the beginning of the semester, I had many ideas as to, what the answer to this question was. I entertained the thought that the art of dance is an expression of feelings and emotions reflected upon movement to rhythms. While that idea may be true in substance, it is incomplete in description. It leaves out some very import parts or avenues within the art of dance. In this essay I will attempt to establish a more complete definition of dance and its role in the human condition. Continue reading

Finals week…

So here I am, smack dab, in the middle of finals. This is the worst time for creativity as I am using it to the max to finish a paper. How many times have you ever sat down to write a paper for a class, opened Word (grabbed the nearest blank sheet of paper) and stared at it with a longing, and hope that words might just, well, appear. Then you sit and you think. You might even start a sentence, just to erase it realizing that it was garbage or just not what the paper is about.

I’ve not had this problem before now, so I attribute it to stress and the requirements for this paper are vague. The professor wants me to write from my opinion, a surmise of the subject of the class, yet include untold details from earlier lectures. We have been told that we will be graded on content from the unstated lectures, along with the completeness of our stated opinion.

Tough…

It makes me tired just thinking of what lies before me. *YAWN* Where was I? Uh, I forgot… Anyway, if it weren’t for all the other school and work deadlines I don’t think this would be so difficult, it’s just the timing and fatigue getting in my way.

Well, I think this concludes the update on my current situation. Onward ho!

Bye-bye…
